“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” -Albert Einstein
I’ve always loved this quote. It’s true for just about everything in life. More recently for me it seems applicable to a lot of areas of my life —from showering (yes, standing in the shower) to teaching yoga and rinsing my teeth with oil.
The most “shocking” change I’ve made recently is taking a cold shower a couple times a week. For someone who despises being cold, cold showers have become part of my weekly routine. I admit the first few moments are rough but the after-effect is worth it. I feel amazing (once it’s over). My skin loves it. My mind is awake and I feel alive with new energy. Often it’s better than a cup of coffee, especially those mornings I have to be up to teach a 6am private yoga client. Here’s my cold shower recipe:
- I “dry” brush my entire body first.
- Lather my body with almond oil.
- Turn the cold shower on & step in for 2 minutes.
- Upon stepping out, I rub down with a clean bath towel.
- Apply more almond oil.

Another change I’ve recently made: instead of simply rinsing my mouth with mouthwash, I now “swish” sesame & coconut oil in my mouth a few times a week for 20 minutes at a time. Yep – you read correctly! I first started with simply coconut oil. I didn’t really notice much of a difference vs. using mouthwash (other than it took a long time). Then I stumbled upon a blend from GuruNanda and I have to say my teeth and mouth feel amazingly clean after. If you’ve considered oil pulling definitely try this blend. It’s only $15 on Amazon. Google oil-pulling to read up on the various benefits it offers.
Lastly, for those that know me I’ve been pretty adamant about only teaching yoga Monday – Friday and having my weekends off since I started teaching yoga full-time in 2006. Though I’ve been fortunate to have a steady private and corporate yoga client base, I’ve always been kind of sad not to have an option for those who wish to practice yoga with me but a) they don’t want to splurge for private yoga instruction at home, and/or b) their company won’t pay for office yoga. So I’m branching out…I’m going to start teaching a weekly Saturday morning class at a local yoga studio (JourneYoga.com). 75 minutes of Dharma Yoga will be on offer.
If you’re considering trying any of the above, start with the cold shower. It’s the least time-consuming (just 2 minutes!) and you’ll literally be shocked by how great you feel – when it’s over! Of course, I’d love to see you in my new yoga class too. Space is limited (15 spots only) so sign up in advance at JourneYoga.com if you plan to come.
