I teach yoga as a one-credit undergraduate course at GWU in Washington, DC. At the start of each semester, I ask the students to pair up and define within a couple sentences "what is yoga?" As they're crafting their answers I remind them that whatever they come up with, it's right. Yoga is a very individual experience so for each person the definition will vary. Here are a few of the responses I received in last week's class: - Yoga is a way to improve posture - It helps reduce … [Read more...]

What is Yoga? (sutra 1.2)
Pure coincidence...3 years ago I wrote a blog post with the exact same title "what is yoga?" Clearly, this is a popular writing because I also blogged on the thought "what is yoga?" back in 2007 too (read it here). The 3rd time is a charm, right? Staying with the commitment I stated in my last blog post, 2012 is my year for digging deeper into my yoga book studies starting with The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Given I touched on yoga sutra 1.1 in the previous post, it seems logical to move to … [Read more...]
What is Yoga?
My very simplified, yet realistic, view of this deep and ancient philosophy is yoga is an experience that each individual has to find for him/herself. Yoga is about learning about oneself, on and off the mat. In order to learn and experience, one must be open to exploring even if it means being a little uncomfortable. To experience the beauty that yoga offers one must be receptive and committed to the learning process. Yoga is a lifelong learning process. Even once you think you’ve found your … [Read more...]
What is Yoga for You?
If you’ve been practicing yoga for a while, you probably have your own definition of what yoga is based on your personal experience. And, that’s a great thing! Yoga is a different experience for everyone. Ask 10 people what yoga is and you’re likely to get 10 different answers ---anything from its literal translation (yoga means union) to a more in-depth answer (yoga is about connecting one’s self to the universal Self). Is there a wrong answer? I don’t believe there is. As I mentioned, … [Read more...]
What is Yoga?
Most of us (in America) think of yoga as a physical practice; another form of exercise. To a small degree, it is a physical exercise. Before delving into what yoga is, let’s start with the translation of yoga. Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root "yuj" which means to yoke/to join/union. Taking this into true translation, yoga means joining the spirit of the Individual Soul (Atman) with the Universal Soul (Brahman). In everyday American terms, yoga can be looked at as a process of … [Read more...]
Private Yoga Rates
Yoga teachers often ask me (and plenty of "soon to be" yoga teachers who attend my Business of Yoga classes) "what do you charge for an in-home private yoga session?" It seems like it should be a simple answer. In my mind, there is a lot more to it than most think. So I'm going to put it out there... As for my in-home private yoga rate where I travel to the client (which means I am managing the commute/traffic/rolling out the door for 6am client on a cold winter morning/etc.), I generally … [Read more...]
