Recently after teaching an office yoga class in DC one of the students asked me if I knew any exercises for the eyes. He said he has a weak muscle in one of his eyes and it makes the balancing poses challenging for him. Years ago I would have frozen and responded nervously. Now I welcome these random questions that are completely beyond my scope of knowledge as a way to explore new yoga territory. It's these types of questions from my students that A) make me a yoga student forever, and B) … [Read more...]
Split “Yogini” Personality
I've been debating on sharing this blog post (from my journal) for a week or so. Then I had a shift on Friday during a Dharma class at Pure Prana in Old Town Alexandria. I'll save the "wow" moment for the end. So get reading... In my previous blog post, I offered a glimpse into what my daily Dharma Mittra practice/plans and diet are for the next couple months. One aspect of the daily practice is reflecting on satya. This reflection process means spending time each day to reflect on … [Read more...]
WOW! for today
After the OM's and Namaste in my lunchtime office Vinyasa Yoga class yesterday, I reminded the group that Friday is our monthly Yin Yoga class. One of my students responded with an unpleasant facial expression stating "by that time I'll have already been up 9+ hours". I was like "WOW!". Though my simple one word response was filled with internal depth. I was not only hearing from her how much she was dreading Friday but sensing the anxiety/dread of how much that day is already setting the … [Read more...]
yAY YogA!
It's no secret I practice yoga asana a lot. On a good week I hit the mat 6 days to enjoy my personal yoga practice. On an off week, I may only get to it 5 times. Sure there are days I don't feel like practicing but I know time on my sticky mat, even if it's only a mini-session of 20-30 minutes, will shift my energy, clear my mind and support my teaching. There are also times when I'm presented with sweet surprises in the midst of my practice session - such as when I explore/fool around in a … [Read more...]
May
I just realized this morning during my meditation practice (as the birds & fresh air surrounded me) how much I adore the month of May. We're beyond the cold, dreary winter and just out of the somewhat rainy, warm month of April. For me May signals the start of summer and a year ahead, full of possibilities. I've decided May is my New Year! Living in the DC area for 15+ years now, I have been fortunate not to acquire any allergies to pollen, grass, etc. so I love the smell of fresh cut … [Read more...]
Corporate Wellness Radio Spot
At the end of January, exactly two days before heading off to CO to ski, I was contacted by Voice of America to discuss corporate wellness programs, specifically yoga in the workplace. Given it's a passion of mine, I wasn't going to turn down the chance to speak about yoga in the corporate world. It's what I live and breathe and love teaching/sharing. The timing wasn't great though since my focus was on wrapping life up before heading out for week of vacation. When I asked what the deadline … [Read more...]
