Reasons to Do Yoga Barefoot

November 10, 2008 By Melody

Our feet crave space and air (reason #1 to practice yoga barefoot).  Think about it.  We enter this world barefoot, kicking and wiggling about happily.  Some remain barefoot (in many third world countries) and happy for life.  Others (most Americans) cover their feet and as a result have an array of unpleasant foot problems –inflamed bunions, painful plantar fascitis, and throbbing hammer toes.  I once read 70% of people will suffer from foot problems many of which can be prevented. Human … [Read more...]

Things to Check Out

November 2, 2008 By Melody

For some reason, my life crazy busy right now…two weddings in the last month, doctors appointments of all types (dentist, chiropractor, GYN, vet), teaching yoga, managing my business, visiting family in DE one weekend, catching up with long-lost friends on facebook (which I’m so behind on), dining with friends locally, staying on top of the house.  The list is endless. I feel like the one thing keeping me sane is my daily yoga practice.  As crazy busy as I feel, my yoga offers calm.  … [Read more...]

Revealing Thoughts on Balance in Yoga and Life

October 23, 2008 By Melody

Yoga Sutra II: 46 reads “sthira sukham asanam” in Sanskrit.  Translation:  Asana is a steady comfortable posture.  Asana means “seat or posture”, and is defined by two qualities: sthira and sukha, stability and comfort. Yoga teaches us to seek balance between opposing forces - strength (sthira) and ease (sukha), comfort and discomfort, heaviness and lightness.  This essential lesson can offer freedom in life, grace on the yoga mat and bring peace to our hearts.  Often times, finding balance is … [Read more...]

Calling All Yoga Teachers and Yoga Therapists – Read This

September 25, 2008 By Melody

If you are a yoga therapist, read this.  If you are a yoga teacher interested in yoga therapy (like myself) and not quite clear on the differences, read this article “I’m Not a Yoga Therapist Anymore!”. I recently joined the International Association of Yoga Therapy (IAYT) in an effort to better understand the field of yoga therapy.  I often have thought the term yoga therapy sounds like a temporary solution or short-term cure of using yoga to address physical health problems.  Yoga is so much … [Read more...]

Why OM?

September 4, 2008 By Melody

To start with, to Om is to chant.  Chanting is simply the rhythmic speaking or singing of words or phrases.  Chanting is a beautiful way to bring more life to your asana practice. Om is the oldest chant in India.  Om, considered to be an all-pervading sound in the universe, connects us to everything around us and within us.  Comprised of three syllables –A, U, M – Om is pronounced AhhOohMmm.  Typically, at least one of these syllables is the first sound a baby makes.  In a yoga class, Om is … [Read more...]

Hooping and Chakras

August 24, 2008 By Melody

Is it me or is hooping (aka hula hooping) a wonderful way to open the lower chakras (1-3)?   Chakras are energy centers in our bodies.  The root chakra, the first of the 7 main chakras in the human body, resides at the base of the spinal column.  Traveling up the spine from the root chakra are six other centers of energy.  Each chakra plays a role in how we feel – mentally, emotionally and physically. Back to hooping…I bought my Hoopnotic ™ hoop this summer to add some diversity/creative … [Read more...]
