Experiences Shape You

January 10, 2009 By Melody

Don’t resist the bad days of your life.  Invite both the bad and the good with open arms, eyes and more importantly, an open mind.  By doing so, you start to flow with life rather than struggle against it.  Trust your experiences are just that “yours”.  By learning to accept your experiences as they are, humility and compassion are born. Life is full of ups and downs.  In the middle of it all, there is always a reason for what is happening – it just might not be obvious at the time.  Don’t wait … [Read more...]

Power of BEING

January 3, 2009 By Melody

Being you equals being perfect.  Often I hear and read, “no one is perfect”.  According to who’s/what standards, I wonder. Instead of believing you are not perfect, or worse trying to be something you are not (i.e. your idea of perfection), can you just be you?  Can you accept yourself and live from there?  It sounds simple, but for many it’s hard to do and accept. We each have unique talents, abilities, smiles, bodies, minds, etc. that define us as individuals.  Can you enjoy being yourself … [Read more...]

Services to Ease your Life in 2009

December 28, 2008 By Melody

As a yogi, an easy way to practice the ethical principle of ahimsa (non-violence) towards the environment is to actively cut down your junk mail.  If you’re not sure how to do this start here… CatalogChoice and GreenDimes I’ve reviewed both services and personally opted to go with Catalog Choice.  Sure it’s a little more work but I get the benefit of proactively managing what comes to my mail slot.  And it doesn’t cost me anything but a few minutes of my time.  Time Magazine recently ran an … [Read more...]

My Iyengar Experience

December 24, 2008 By Melody

I challenged myself this Fall by registering for a series of Iyengar yoga classes at the Arlington Unity Woods, the premier Iyengar studio in the area.  I congratulate myself for a) trying something new and so different from the style of yoga (power vinyasa) I normally practice, b) making it to more than half of the classes that I prepaid for, and c) doing my best to be available as a student - not once did I mention to anyone that I teach yoga full-time.  I tried to approach the poses as if … [Read more...]

Anjali Mudra

December 15, 2008 By Melody

Yoga classes often use the “namaste” or prayer position, aka anjali mudra, at the beginning, end and sometimes even during class.  With the hands in anjali mudra at heart center, a wonderful stretch for the wrists can be experienced as well a nice opening across the chest & collarbones. Some yogis feel it helps keep their shoulders out of their ears. In addition to stretching, anjali mudra can serve as a reminder that your practice is an offering to your Self.  Anjali means heart.  A mudra … [Read more...]

Why Set an Intention?

November 13, 2008 By Melody

In Sanskrit, sankalpa means intention.  An intention is a promise you make to yourself about what you intend to do, be, say, etc.  An intention is a way to put positive thinking and desires into action. At the beginning of each yoga class I teach, I offer my students a few moments of silence to set a personal intention for their practice.  I often make suggestions such as set your intention around something in your life you’re grateful for.  Or set it based on a quality you want to improve … [Read more...]
