"Stay courageous. To have your courage stripped away by others is something you cannot afford to let happen. Money and property can be taken away by others, but your strength of spirit and human goodness is yours alone to keep or give away." -Max Strom A Life Worth Breathing is by far one of the most inspirational books I've picked up in a long while. If you aren't familiar with Max Strom, I am fond of describing his presence as being like that of a gentle giant. An internationally known … [Read more...]
Blessed -part II
Another reason I feel so blessed by the last month or so is that I've stumbled upon a huge turning point in my yoga journey. I've discovered I'm in a place in my yoga practice where I'm really not all that into learning fancy yoga poses and then returning to them on the mat until the next time. I'm way more curious about digging into the Yoga Sutras and trying to live yoga vs. wrapping my feet behind my head. I definitely believe some of this self-realization could be a result of being … [Read more...]
Fear is Funny
Fear is a funny thing. Just when I think I've gotten beyond a fear, another one shows up. And sometimes I think I'm the only one who had a particular fear. For instance, sometimes I am fearful of standing up in front of large group, particularly an "unknown" group. So it was refreshing to read a recent blog posting by Peggy Mulqueen, one of my favorite yoga teachers in the Washington D.C. area. The post titled "do one thing a day that scares you" was somewhat surprising to read as well … [Read more...]
Be Playful
I often tell my students to treat the yoga mat like an adult playground. The yoga mat is the one place where we can truly express ourselves. It's a safe environment to be creative, explorative and completely free. If you can't be playful in your yoga practice then more than likely you're not playful in your life. Self-expression (being you!) is about being playful. And your yoga practice should be a means of true self-expression at the highest level. No holding back! Feeling free to … [Read more...]
Pause
"There is more to life than increasing speed" - Mahatma Gandhi The translation of the Sanskrit word yoga is union. Often yoga is referred to the union of body, mind and spirit. Yoga is also defined as the union of the small self to the divine. Regardless of the actual translation you prefer, one way to experience this concept of union is to pause. For just one minute every morning, pause. Pause thinking. Pause doing. Simply be. Be with your breath. Be with yourself. Be in your life in … [Read more...]
Reflection
Why do you look in the mirror? What do you say to yourself when you see your reflection? Are you kind to YOU? A few of the places I teach corporate yoga classes have mirrors in the yoga space. I'm not a fan of mirrors in yoga because for many students they can be distracting. Mirrors assist students in judging themselves and just as equally judging those around them. Comparisons and competitive thoughts arise such as why don't I look like him. Why doesn't my Warrior I look like the … [Read more...]
