Last Wednesday (May 27), I turned 37. Not really a magical birthday number but since the moment I woke up that day, I’ve been blessed with many, many birthday wishes and treats –facebook, birthday cards, e-cards, phone calls, cocktails, lunches/brunches, dinners, gifts, flowers. I even received a purple, thickly feathered boa with a matching tiara. Don’t believe me? See my facebook profile pic for proof! What I’ve realized over the last week is the best gifts in life are immeasurable … [Read more...]
I Can’t Touch My Toes!
I often hear this as an excuse from people as to why they haven’t tried yoga (asana). My simple response is usually “well, that’s why you do yoga – to help make you more flexible”. The reality is yoga isn’t about being able to touch your toes. Yes, the asana practice will physically stretch your body out and expose you to muscles you didn’t know existed. But yoga is really a process of self-discovery - discovering yourself as you move your body, actively breath and quiet your mind. The … [Read more...]
Why Do You Do Yoga?
As a yoga student/teacher I have come to learn that each yogi and yogini has a different reason for why they get on their yoga mats. What’s your reason? What is your intention for practicing this ancient blend of science/philosophy and movement (asana) that offers health, balance, peace and ultimately enlightenment? Think about it. Your reason may be different every single time you practice. One day you might practice with the intent of cultivating patience for yourself and others. The … [Read more...]
Beautify It
Towards the end of my 20-minute morning meditation yesterday a phrase popped up in my head “you just need to beautify it”. I zoned into it, heard it a couple times and then snapped out of it. What does it mean? What is the “it”? The timing of this is ironic in that recently I have felt in my meditation practice I am just going the motions. It’s been dry –meaning no revelations/insights have come out of it. I’ve questioned –is it worth it? Am I sitting just to sit? Am I being … [Read more...]
Beautiful, Funny, Delicious
I had an awesome spur-of-the-moment yoga experience this past weekend. A friend, who also happens to be one of my new favorite yoga teachers ☺, invited me to take a couple David Romanelli workshops with her at Sacred Space in Rockville, MD (D.C. area). The workshop themes were 1) “Beautiful, Funny, Delicious and Yoga + Cheese & Olives” and “Fear, Yoga + Chocolate (not necessarily this exact mix but you get the picture). Prior to showing up, I assumed two things about his Yoga + Wine, Yoga … [Read more...]
It’s Human to Hug
As you get further along in your asana practice, you start to understand how yoga postures require you to internally “hug” muscle to bone. In doing so, muscles actively embrace the bones which give your poses stability, strength and ultimately, the support needed for your body to blossom open effortlessly. Hugging people is an expression of love, care and peace. When we actively embrace another human being, there’s a feeling of bonding. We feel internally supported and externally connected to … [Read more...]
