With yoga studios popping up on every corner in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA these days, there's definitely a lot of talk about going to yoga. Jump online or open a magazine and you are sure to find talk about doing yoga. Stand in the midst of voices buzzing at your local coffee shop and you'll hear people chatting "Do you do yoga? I do yoga. I'm going to yoga. I went to yoga." Blah, blah, blah. On my morning dog walk yesterday it hit me that I don't do yoga and I surely don't go to … [Read more...]
Keep Rolling (sutra 1.13)
Effort toward steadiness is practice. sutra 1.13 I get this sutra when it comes to asana practice. I get this sutra when it comes to mountain biking, running and tackling my vision board/goals. What I hadn't quite applied it to until now is my writing. In order for my blogging to be consistent, my journaling needs to be consistent. Daily --- just a like a daily asana practice. The Yoga Sutras weren't shared thousands of years ago in reference to writing or mountain biking but here's the … [Read more...]
The Need to Write (sutra 2.33)
If anyone out there has been reading my blog, it's clear I've been MIA since January. As I documented here, my intention in 2012 is study The Yoga Sutras in detail and blog weekly on one of the them. With 190+ of them to choose from, sounds like a simple task yet I have definitely fallen short of my "weekly blogging" intention. And it's easy to beat myself up over it. It seemed like the more weeks that went by the harder it was for me to jump back out here and write. I couldn't even … [Read more...]
Eye Yoga (sutra 3.1)
Recently after teaching an office yoga class in DC one of the students asked me if I knew any exercises for the eyes. He said he has a weak muscle in one of his eyes and it makes the balancing poses challenging for him. Years ago I would have frozen and responded nervously. Now I welcome these random questions that are completely beyond my scope of knowledge as a way to explore new yoga territory. It's these types of questions from my students that A) make me a yoga student forever, and B) … [Read more...]
What is Yoga? (sutra 1.2)
Pure coincidence...3 years ago I wrote a blog post with the exact same title "what is yoga?" Clearly, this is a popular writing because I also blogged on the thought "what is yoga?" back in 2007 too (read it here). The 3rd time is a charm, right? Staying with the commitment I stated in my last blog post, 2012 is my year for digging deeper into my yoga book studies starting with The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Given I touched on yoga sutra 1.1 in the previous post, it seems logical to move to … [Read more...]
Celebrate Now (sutra 1.1)
Now the exposition of yoga is being made. Yoga Sutra 1.1 When people hear the word yoga most immediately think of either physically challenging postures (asana) to tone & strengthen the body or the complete opposite - relaxing, stretchy poses to create a zen mind. Neither of these are wrong but they are just a glimpse into what yoga really offers. To me, yoga is a celebration of "what is" in life particularly within our individual selves. Yoga is about accepting our bodies (and others) … [Read more...]
