Who is God? Why is the topic of he/she/shim so complicated and controversial? Part of my summer "to do" list is to read The Bhagavad Gita again for the 3rd time in 4 years. I am trying and hoping to finally make some sense of it. So as I've started reading it I can't help but contemplate this God/Krishna/Allah/Buddha question. My teacher Dharma Mittra ends all his classes by saying "Be receptive to the grace of God". Thoughts of "how, what, why, who is this God" spin through my head. In … [Read more...]
WOW! for today
After the OM's and Namaste in my lunchtime office Vinyasa Yoga class yesterday, I reminded the group that Friday is our monthly Yin Yoga class. One of my students responded with an unpleasant facial expression stating "by that time I'll have already been up 9+ hours". I was like "WOW!". Though my simple one word response was filled with internal depth. I was not only hearing from her how much she was dreading Friday but sensing the anxiety/dread of how much that day is already setting the … [Read more...]
Yoga Loves All
Towards the end of my Saturday morning practice at my dear friend Ursula's yoga studio, Inner Power Yoga, I had a magical thought light up my mind. As we rotated with breath in ardha matsyendrasana, I had a vantage point of a sea of practitioners who had been all around and behind me during the entire 90 minute flow. A beautiful flood of faces and ages both male and female, all of different heights, weights and yoga experience levels made me beam with the feeling that YOGA really LOVES … [Read more...]
May
I just realized this morning during my meditation practice (as the birds & fresh air surrounded me) how much I adore the month of May. We're beyond the cold, dreary winter and just out of the somewhat rainy, warm month of April. For me May signals the start of summer and a year ahead, full of possibilities. I've decided May is my New Year! Living in the DC area for 15+ years now, I have been fortunate not to acquire any allergies to pollen, grass, etc. so I love the smell of fresh cut … [Read more...]
Yoga -More than Movement
Sorry to tell you, you're missing out on yoga if all you think of and do are yoga poses (aka asana) when you hear the word yoga. Sure yoga does consist of postures, poses, pretzel shapes or whatever you want to call them. An asana practice is key for waking us up to our bodies, releasing tension & toxins and helping us move through life with a sense of lightness. This is a wonderful aspect of yoga but there is so much more. Beyond moving, yoga is learning to breathe in a way that will … [Read more...]
Vision Board Comes to Life
As some of you know I spent a few days last week at a meditation/writing retreat at Shambhala Mountain Center in Red Feather Lakes, CO. It was a serene three days of meditating and writing, without cell/internet/tv/radio service and 600 acres of land to explore at my leisure. One of the unexpected highlights of my trip was spending time outside, in and around The Great Stupa. I had read about it online prior to my trip but the online pics paled in comparison to seeing it live with my own … [Read more...]
