Those who know me know I wear a lot of black. The second runner up: grey. I like colors - bright shades of turquoise, popping purples and light/bright pinks - but black has just been an easy "go to option" especially as a full-time yoga teacher. The truth is I've used a slew of excuses "in my head" for nearly 10 years now as to why I wear so much black: Black yoga pants (and tops) have a more professional look to them than bright yoga pants do. I don't stand out as much when I enter a … [Read more...]
Office Yoga – It’s My Thing!
Last week I was grateful to teach a series of office yoga sessions for a huge global real estate company with several DC locations as part of their employee health & wellness program. After spending three days in a row in Bethesda, MD (Tues), Washington, DC (Wed) and McLean, VA (Thurs) teaching the benefits of yogic breathing and movement (yoga asana) in conference rooms, I realized a few things: Yoga is accessible to everyone, anywhere, anytime. In these office yoga sessions I … [Read more...]
Office Yoga – It Works at Work
It doesn't matter where in the world your office is located ---the U.S.A, UK or Japan --- it's exciting to see how more and more companies are reaping the benefits of office yoga by simply offering yoga in their workplace once or twice per week to their employees. Even more exciting is reading stats like this... A study led by Professor Jim McKenna, from Leeds Beckett University, surveyed 210 office workers to find that lunchtime exercise increased staff productivity, and even helped them … [Read more...]
From Yoga Mat to Corner Office
Teaching office yoga in and around Washington, DC and Arlington, VA since 2006, I have acquired a stat that often boggles my mind. Usually only about 5-10% of the onsite employees participate in office yoga classes. Regardless of whether the company fully sponsors the office yoga classes or the individual employees partially or fully pay, the participation isn't as great as many think. The former (where the company pays 100% for office yoga) is the biggest mind blower for me...free yoga in … [Read more...]
Sitting Disease? There’s an App for That!
If you live in the Washington, DC area chances are you sit every morning and evening traveling to/from the office. When you're not commuting, you probably sit a good 8-9 hours at your desk. Then you get home after the long work day and all you want to do is sit on the sofa with a good book, watch funny TV show or worse, get online to do more work. Start to add up your sitting hours and the next thing you'll find is you probably sit a solid 50% or more of your day. Even if you go to yoga … [Read more...]
#BeerYoga
I was asked at the start of my office yoga class today "What yoga studios do you teach in?" The answer is...I don't. 99% of the time I teach yoga in non-studio settings - offices, museums, a bike store, schools, parks, hotels, conference centers and most recently a brewery (more on that below) - all around the Washington DC / Arlington VA / Alexandria VA area. Basically anywhere there is open (and free!) space I am up for teaching yoga. I may have the oddest yoga props and blackest feet … [Read more...]
