A few years ago at a San Francisco Yoga Journal workshop I attended led by David Swenson, I heard a quote that has stuck with me. In the middle of attempting a forearm balance he said "There are fears that keep us alive, and there are fears that keep us from living." Writer extraordinaire Michelle, of 210 days of waves, posted this article today "What's the Meaning of This?" at workawesome.com. As I read through it, I was fully taken down memory lane. I vividly recall the thoughts I use to … [Read more...]
Awake
For the fourth night in a row this week, I have woken up at 4am unable to fall back to sleep. This morning as I lie awake I continue to think about how I just under charged a new private yoga client based on his location & the possible number of attendees. I finally get out of bed to get a glass of juice. As I stand and drink my juice, I turn on my BlackBerry and see an email from one of my dear neighbors. She sent the email to all of my neighbors asking each of us to pray on behalf of a … [Read more...]
What is Yoga?
My very simplified, yet realistic, view of this deep and ancient philosophy is yoga is an experience that each individual has to find for him/herself. Yoga is about learning about oneself, on and off the mat. In order to learn and experience, one must be open to exploring even if it means being a little uncomfortable. To experience the beauty that yoga offers one must be receptive and committed to the learning process. Yoga is a lifelong learning process. Even once you think you’ve found your … [Read more...]
How Was Your Weekend?
My Mondays start at 6:45am with a private yoga client in Arlington, then I head to Potomac, MD to teach another private yoga session. I have a mini-break which I run home to walk my dog, meditatively, and then dart back out the door to teach a corporate lunchtime yoga class in D.C. This is my typical Monday. And like most Mondays, today after leaving the corporate yoga class I stopped into Smoothie King to satisfy my Green Tea Tango with Banana addiction. The girl asked me “how was your … [Read more...]
Bow Your Head to Your Heart
“Get your mind out of it and follow your heart” is what I sometimes tell my yoga students when they seem to be analyzing vs. being in a pose. So often we let our minds rule our world. The result? The life you have at this moment. I’m not saying don’t use your smarts. God gave us brains for a reason, but he also gave us hearts. What if you followed your heart first then let the mind join in for the ride. How different would your life be today? I feel lucky and happy in my life for many … [Read more...]
Right under My Nose
I’ve been in search of a specific item. I was in need of a funky container/small piece of furniture to house my yoga practice stuff (DVDs, straps, blocks) in my all-in-one home office/yoga studio. This seemed like a simple task so I started my search at Target, Pier I and all the other local places that might have what I desired. The search existed for a good 6 months. During that time, I brought home a couple different things, sat with them in the space and inevitably packed them back up to … [Read more...]
