Yoga Secrets – in the heart of NYC

May 21, 2014 By Melody

After spending this past weekend with Sri Dharma Mittra, I am convinced there is no reason to travel to India or some far away land to experience the best of yoga.  Teaching yoga since 1967, Sri Dharma founded the first independent school of yoga in NYC in 1975 and is known internationally as the "Teachers' Teacher".  Smack in the heart of Manhattan, he has been sharing the secrets of success not just in yoga but in life. As he stated on Sunday, there are just four things you need to do to … [Read more...]

Beyond OM

May 5, 2014 By Melody

As Sri Dharma Mittra often states at the start of a Master class, "all yoga practices begin and end with the sound of OM."  True to form, this video captures this instruction at the beginning of his full day of teaching at the Washington Convention Center April 6, 2014. Beyond the sacred sound of OM, which is said to be the oldest mantra in the world, there are many other mantras frequently chanted in asana classes at yoga studios around the world.  Mantras exist for many things including … [Read more...]

500-hour Yoga Teacher Training -is it right for you?

February 6, 2014 By Melody

An advanced yoga teacher training program (such as a 300-hour or 500-hour yoga teacher training) can be an exciting decision - assuming you're ready for it.  Maybe you "think" you are ready for it since you just completed your 200-hour in the last year, but is that enough of a prerequisite to take the leap to doing a 500-hour yoga teacher training? My recent observation is people are treating yoga teacher trainings like college degrees:  you graduate with a Bachelor's degree and then … [Read more...]

What is Yoga?

January 28, 2014 By Melody

I teach yoga as a one-credit undergraduate course at GWU in Washington, DC.  At the start of each semester, I ask the students to pair up and define within a couple sentences "what is yoga?" As they're crafting their answers I remind them that whatever they come up with, it's right.  Yoga is a very individual experience so for each person the definition will vary.  Here are a few of the responses I received in last week's class: - Yoga is a way to improve posture - It helps reduce … [Read more...]

How Yoga Changes Your Body

January 9, 2014 By Melody

I absolutely had to share this infograph from the Huffington Post article How Yoga Changes Your Body, Starting The Day You Begin.  It's an amazing representation of what you will experience immediately after a yoga class (even your first class) and the benefits you'll discover after practicing yoga for several months. The key is practice.  Simply getting on your mat, moving and breathing on a regular basis.  As Pattabhi Jois said "practice and all is coming." Beyond the infograph, the … [Read more...]

The Real Deal: Sri Dharma Mittra

August 30, 2013 By Melody

A little over two weeks ago I had just returned from NYC after spending 8 solid days there immersed in an 800-hour yoga teacher training with Sri Dharma Mittra.  Yes, even though I'm a professional yoga teacher I still continue to study yoga and attend yoga teacher trainings...another blog post, at another time.  Anyway, many knew this was my "big training" for the year so immediately upon reconnecting to life, friends, family, teaching, etc. several people naturally asked "so how was it?!?"  … [Read more...]
