The Business of Yoga (part 4) is all about the importance of networking. As I explained to the Flow Yoga Center yoga teacher trainees yesterday in Washington, DC, word-of-mouth continues to be an essential key to locking in private and corporate yoga clients since starting abellaYoga nearly eight years ago. Face-to-face connections in today’s social media/texting world seem to often get pushed to the side. It’s far easier to hide behind a computer screen and promote yourself vs. physically … [Read more...]
Taking a Break
As a small business owner (i.e. full-time traveling yoga teacher), I'm often asked "How are you able to take vacation?" Or sometimes it sounds like "Won't your office yoga /corporate clients find another instructor?" and "Aren't you worried your private yoga clients will be upset?" Honestly, I'm always baffled by this type of question Part of a yoga teacher's job is to help people feel better. Better is a simple term for a world of sensations such as healthy, grounded, energized, … [Read more...]
500-hour Yoga Teacher Training -is it right for you?
An advanced yoga teacher training program (such as a 300-hour or 500-hour yoga teacher training) can be an exciting decision - assuming you're ready for it. Maybe you "think" you are ready for it since you just completed your 200-hour in the last year, but is that enough of a prerequisite to take the leap to doing a 500-hour yoga teacher training? My recent observation is people are treating yoga teacher trainings like college degrees: you graduate with a Bachelor's degree and then … [Read more...]
No Expectations, No Coincidences
In the last few weeks I received emails from a few publishing houses & PR firms asking if I'd be interested in reviewing some of their clients' yoga books. Though my reading list for the new year is already full, I figured maybe (just maybe) one of these books might inspire me to hop back onto my blog which I've clearly neglected the last couple months. So I graciously accepted the offers stating I would add each book to my 2014 reading list. Well here it is - and the best part is the … [Read more...]
The Real Deal: Sri Dharma Mittra
A little over two weeks ago I had just returned from NYC after spending 8 solid days there immersed in an 800-hour yoga teacher training with Sri Dharma Mittra. Yes, even though I'm a professional yoga teacher I still continue to study yoga and attend yoga teacher trainings...another blog post, at another time. Anyway, many knew this was my "big training" for the year so immediately upon reconnecting to life, friends, family, teaching, etc. several people naturally asked "so how was it?!?" … [Read more...]
Sh*t Happens, So Be In It
For those of you that know me, this blog post title is probably a surprise. For those of you that don't know me well, let me state upfront I don't curse (well at least not 99.9% of the time). Thanks to my parents & grandparents, I'm just not a fan of it. Though I'm sure we can all admit every now and then it's appropriate because every now and then sh*t happens! Stuff happens all the time, right? You've made it through airport security and you find out your flight is delayed 3 hours, … [Read more...]
