As many of you know I spent this Fall working on my 500-hour yoga teacher training certification in NYC with Sri Dharma Mittra at his main temple/yoga center. I did the training to expand my yoga teaching knowledge and propel my personal practice of pranayama, meditation and asana. Of course, I did that. Though unexpectedly, I received so much beyond what I could have ever anticipated. To the point, I don't think I can fully articulate it but here goes... I have a huge responsibility ahead … [Read more...]
Lip Balm Panic
Life is all about change, right? And yoga teaches us how to be agile (and oh so graceful) as we surf the flow of change -whether we are in an asana class, literally surfing the Pacific (go Michelle!) or just trying to get through life. In other words, yoga shows us how to be with change and ride it verses resist it and run. I believe this concept so much that I talked about riding change and its challenges on Monday morning during the yoga class I taught to the City of Alexandria Fire … [Read more...]
Malas for Haiti
The beauty of Fall is finally arriving here in Washington, DC. Though I prefer sunny days and outdoor yoga over cold temps and snow, the reality is the chill and thrill of the holidays will be here before we know it. Heck, the December date & hosts for my Arlington, VA neighborhood holiday progressive dinner party (that's a mouthful!) has been set for weeks already. So really, the "season of giving" will be here shortly. With that in mind, I've decided I'm scaling back on holiday gifts … [Read more...]
Split “Yogini” Personality
I've been debating on sharing this blog post (from my journal) for a week or so. Then I had a shift on Friday during a Dharma class at Pure Prana in Old Town Alexandria. I'll save the "wow" moment for the end. So get reading... In my previous blog post, I offered a glimpse into what my daily Dharma Mittra practice/plans and diet are for the next couple months. One aspect of the daily practice is reflecting on satya. This reflection process means spending time each day to reflect on … [Read more...]
We’ve Only Just Begun…
I returned home on Monday 9/19 from the start of my 500-hour yoga teacher training with Dharma Mittra in NYC. The entire week up in NYC at The Dharma Yoga Center was amazing! In a short 8+ day period with Dharma and his fabulous (ego-less) teachers, things have already shifted for me in a way I can't fully explain. Even more exciting is realizing the 8 days I just concluded in NYC were just the beginning of the training which might explain why the song title "We've Only Just Begun" keeps … [Read more...]
The Only Constant: Change
"I'm coaching you to dance with the one constant in life: change. Do you choose stagnation or the unknown? Every choice you make can propel you toward change or keep you in the same dulling, suffocating box. Change is rebirth. When a caterpillar weaves herself into a chrysalis and undergoes metamorphosis, she emerges as a butterfly, bearing only the merest resemblance to her earlier form. Transformation can be really exciting, but we have to tolerate an incredible period of vulnerability … [Read more...]
