Last week I was grateful to teach a series of office yoga sessions for a huge global real estate company with several DC locations as part of their employee health & wellness program. After spending three days in a row in Bethesda, MD (Tues), Washington, DC (Wed) and McLean, VA (Thurs) teaching the benefits of yogic breathing and movement (yoga asana) in conference rooms, I realized a few things: Yoga is accessible to everyone, anywhere, anytime. In these office yoga sessions I … [Read more...]
Swishing, Showering & Teaching Yoga
"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" -Albert Einstein I've always loved this quote. It's true for just about everything in life. More recently for me it seems applicable to a lot of areas of my life ---from showering (yes, standing in the shower) to teaching yoga and rinsing my teeth with oil. The most "shocking" change I've made recently is taking a cold shower a couple times a week. For someone who despises being cold, cold showers … [Read more...]
Going Solo – Yoga in NYC
Train-bound to NYC solo to practice yoga with my teacher Sri Dharma Mittra. Beyond grateful whenever I can head up for a day to be in his presence with one of my yoga sisters. Today though it's just me heading up. My dear friend's daughter was sick all night so she had to cancel in the middle of the night. Funny thing is I had a "feeling" last night before heading to bed that for some random reason my friend wouldn't be able to go today. Admittedly it crossed my mind last night to cancel … [Read more...]
Real Life Meditation
I recently tweeted "I love when people say they don't have time to #meditate. Get this: there are 1,440 min/day & 5 min is just .03% of the day. #breathe" Whether you live in a city like Washington, DC or not, most of us live in a chaotic world. Remember "back in the day" when technology was touted as a way to make life easier? In some ways it has offered many conveniences (my favorite is I can deposit checks via my phone). The drawback is people are ON 24/7 which means their minds … [Read more...]
Office Yoga – It Works at Work
It doesn't matter where in the world your office is located ---the U.S.A, UK or Japan --- it's exciting to see how more and more companies are reaping the benefits of office yoga by simply offering yoga in their workplace once or twice per week to their employees. Even more exciting is reading stats like this... A study led by Professor Jim McKenna, from Leeds Beckett University, surveyed 210 office workers to find that lunchtime exercise increased staff productivity, and even helped them … [Read more...]
Meditation 101
This morning kicked off a four-week meditation course I'm teaching at Journey Yoga in Arlington, VA. It was exciting to see 14 yogis I've never met before truly interested in learning how to meditate. It was also fun to share with them that yoga is so much more than the asanas -the yoga poses. The physical postures of yoga are just a sliver (seriously, like 1%) of what makes up the practices of yoga, yet they are what we most think of when we hear the term "yoga". Yoga, as defined by … [Read more...]
