I’m a little overweight. Will I still be able to practice yoga and gather strength and muscle tone from it?

September 20, 2006 By Melody

The best thing about yoga is that anyone can do regardless of size, age, level of experience, etc.  There are many styles of yoga — all of which will help tone, lengthen and strengthen the muscles.  By regularly practicing yoga poses (asanas), you’ll start to stretch muscles that have been tightened by inactivity, tension, and stress; enhance your flexibility and balance; and increase your range of motion in joints (knees, shoulders, hips, etc.).  Over time you’ll also notice that your posture will improve which sometimes tends to suffer when the physical body has been neglected.

Start with 20 minutes of yoga every other day and build up from there.  You’ll begin to feel more energetic in both the body and mind.  To get started, look at buying a beginner yoga video or seek the instruction of a private yoga teacher in your area.
