A little over two weeks ago I had just returned from NYC after spending 8 solid days there immersed in an 800-hour yoga teacher training with Sri Dharma Mittra. Yes, even though I’m a professional yoga teacher I still continue to study yoga and attend yoga teacher trainings…another blog post, at another time. Anyway, many knew this was my “big training” for the year so immediately upon reconnecting to life, friends, family, teaching, etc. several people naturally asked “so how was it?!?” All I could say was “AMAZING!!!” It truly was.
Then out of the blue a fellow DC yoga teacher (who I haven’t spoken with in a few years) emailed me via facebook to see if I would chat with her about Dharma Mittra’s 500-hour Life of a Yogi Teacher Training coming up this Fall. She had no clue I had just returned from spending 8+ days with him up there. Of course, I didn’t hesitate in my response. I pretty much said “Call me and whether we connect or not you must sign-up for Dharma’s training. It’s the best!”
Other than teaching workshops and at yoga conferences around the world, Sri Dharma Mittra been teaching primarily in NYC for 50 years. Known as the teachers’ teacher, he has such a humble presence and is open to sharing all he knows. The best part is all he knows and shares is based on true experience —his personal experience and devotion to the practice and study of the 8-limbs of yoga (sometimes considered Hatha-Raja yoga, or classical yoga) since he moved to NYC directly from his home country (Brazil) in the late 1960’s. He doesn’t hold back…he shares all he knows sincerely, deep from within his heart.
I’m saying it again because it’s so very true: by far the trainings I’ve done with Sri Dharma and his master teachers have been the best yoga teacher trainings I’ve ever done. Plus, the moments I’ve spent with him and his master teachers always seem to result in the most precious time I’ve ever had on my yoga mat. Dharma Mittra is the real deal. The 800-hour was such a rich experience. In fact, I’m even hoping to attend it in two years (2015) when it’s offered again. Until then, I will continue to hop the train monthly from DC to NYC (round trip in less than 18 hours often) to simply be in the presence of this inspiring, kind and genuine yogi. Dharma Mittra is truly a gem, brightly shining all his light in the heart of NYC.
Don’t believe me?!??! Train, plane or automobile, go take a class with him. At 74, Dharma still teaches 12 classes a week, stands on his head with no hands, cracks jokes and uses way more technology than I know what to do with. Again, Dharma Mittra is the real deal offering the an authentic yoga experience smack in the middle of of Manhattan.
